A Cool Little Adventure in The Lake District at Lumley Fee Bunkhouse
When I set out planning these series of trips closer to home over the winter months I really wanted to experience some unique places to stay, places where the stay itself would be an experience, a bit of an adventure…places which would leave us with stories to tell. I’ve been really lucky and have stayed at some amazing places. We’ve experienced Luxurious adventure, glamping in Cornwall, had first class service at The Croke Park, Dublin, enjoyed a magical Christmas getaway at the AA hotel of the year Wales, The Angel Hotel, Abergavenny, and had a very special stay at The Lamplighter Dining Rooms, Windermere enjoying a dining experience which was right up there with the best I have ever had. All brilliant places which I just can’t recommend highly enough, all providing different experiences and unique in their own ways.
Lumley Fee Bunkhouse, Helsington, near Kendal was totally different to anything I had experienced before…ever…and it was just so cool! Ive stayed in loads of hostels, shared dorms with groups I’ve travelled with, shared dorms with strangers, kipped in bunkhouses… some have been horrible!!! Some great, some have been better than four star hotels I’ve stayed in! But there is just something really warm, magical and inviting about Lumley Fee Bunkhouse…this was so much fun, a really cool little adventure!
Lumley Fee Bunkhouse and it’s sister inn The Wheatsheaf are part of a small collection of inns with accommodation owned by Individual Inns. We collected our keys from The Wheatsheaf, just down the road from the bunkhouse in Brigsteer. We had food here both nights of our stay as well, it’s really popular and booking ahead is a must, the food is really good and there is a great selection of beers, plus you can get 4 pint carafes of beer to take back with you to the accommodation! It’s a really cosy pub with a lovely atmosphere, a great place for food.
After collecting the keys we headed off along the track to the Bunkhouse, we arrived during the night, and it was so dark you could hardly see your hand in front of your face, it was a clear night as well and the sky was full of stars. This is a bunkhouse in name only really, it is a very nice place with everything needed for a really comfortable stay. We found our room, number 2…Scafell Pike, which had two sets of bunkbeds made up for us and an ensuite bathroom (with another awesome power shower!) but it was quirkiness of this place which made it so cool.
We kept discovering little things telling each other to look at this and look at that, it was awesome! We both had two really comfortable nights sleep here and the rooms being priced around £55 a night, especially when sharing, makes this unbelievably good value! All the rooms are private and there is a larger room on the top floor which is a little bit more expensive.
When we found the communal area of the bunkhouse it was almost as if we had wandered into Aladdin’s cave, or stumbled into a house from Harry Potter! Amazing…the communal area had a lounge part with a huge comfy corner sofa, really cool wooden trailer type table and great open fire! There was a big picnic bench style table and benches and the kitchen was filled with everything you could need. There were so many little touches which really gave it a magical feel, little ornaments, boardgames, books, loads of information about the local area, the decor…we loved it!
The building was a school house and has an atmosphere that can only be created with time. We loved spending both of our nights here in the lounge area in front of the open fire with a beer brought back from The Wheatsheaf, chatting with other guests about our adventures that day and what plans we had for the next, we had such a brilliant time here, a massive amount of fun!
When we saw the view for the first time outside it was pretty hard to believe! It had been so dark we had no idea that you could see for miles around! We were in the middle of fields filled with sheep, there were no worries here…all the stresses of everyday life were forgotten here…it was adventure time and it was fun!
We found that the bunkhouse was next door to a pretty little church and on our second morning snow flakes began to fall, had this been scripted? If you are looking to get outdoors and enjoy the hills, lakes and incredible scenery of this beautiful area then Lumley Fee Bunkhouse has everything you need to make the most of it and will definitely add to your experience of a fun filled trip.
We visited in January and had a whale of a time, I would absolutely love to visit in the warmer weather as well with seats outside and a barbeque to use, it’s so inviting and a wonderful place to spend time. It’s location is ideal as well, near enough to the main roads to get around easily, once you are in the Lake district it seems as though everywhere is pretty close.
The town of Kendal is only 10-15 minutes drive away and is filled with unique little cafés and traditional pubs, it’s a nice place to wander around and explore and of course pick up some famous Kendal Mint Cake! We had fun here chatting to the locals and finding out a bit more about the history of the area.
You can book your stay at Lumley Fee Bunkhouse on their website and you can also compare prices, check out reviews and book through TripAdvisor. There are five private rooms which sleep up to four each making it the perfect place for a group trip to the area.
Check out my previous post here and find out more about where we went and what we did whilst in the Lake District and look out for my next post taking on the Via Ferrata at Honister Slate Mine!
We were supported by Cumbria Tourism with our trip to the Lake District, their website is filled with great places to stay and cool things to do. If you are thinking of making a trip before the end of March check out the Love Cumbria card which for £10 gives you loads of 2 for 1 offers on attractions and discounts in restaurants which makes it very good value for money!
Again as always thanks for reading, let me know if you have been here or plan going here in the comments or drop me a message either here or on social media. We are busy putting plans into place for some awesome trips throughout 2017 which we are really excited about including heading out to Thailand, Singapore, and Bali! What a trip that is going to be!!!
