Another Amazing Travel First With TripAdvisor – A Helicopter Tour of Monaco!
For me travel is all about new experiences. Meeting new people, learning about different cultures, trying the local cuisine, trying a new exciting activity. Whilst travelling searching for things to do via TripAdvisor has given us so many amazing new experiences, provided us with so many awesome memories…given us so many stories to tell. What’s that saying? “Travel, it leaves you speechless then turns you into a story teller!” Never a truer word spoken!
We recently visited the glamorous Principality of Monaco! What an incredible place…just hearing the name conjures up images from movies, of super cars, motor racing, super yachts! We were going to be having a taste of the high life on the beautiful French Riviera. We had such an amazing time, Monaco surprised us in so many ways as well, full of friendly fun loving people, fun and enjoyment are at the top of most peoples lists of priorities here! It was also a really beautiful setting, and we were really surprised to find that having a great time here didn’t mean having to remortgage the house!
So we were looking for that one special experience, an activity which would match the glamour of the place we were in, something we had never done before, a travel first for us to experience. The TripAdvisor website gave us a lot to choose from, after all we were in a place which was very different from our everyday lives, a place which in some ways didn’t seem real, a place where everybody leaves those daily worries behind!
From the window of our room at The Columbus, Monte Carlo, we had seen a procession of helicopters flying out over sea. When we saw that we could book a helicopter tour of Monaco through TripAdvisor and that the reviews were brilliant, we knew it was perfect, something neither of us had done before…the excitement hit us straight away! “PLEASE BE AVAILABLE ON OUR DATES!” …It was!
We were picked up from our hotel by our driver and taken the (very) short distance to the heliport which was built on top of the promenade right on the sea front, it was all pretty spectacular…but then should we have expected anything different in Monaco? We checked in, kind of similar to checking in at a regular airport…except we were pretty much the only people in the entire building! The excitement continued to build, we were turning into big kids! You know that feeling you get when your in a queue for a huge roller coaster, I had that!
With cameras and phones at the ready we were lead out onto the helipad and shown into the helicopter we we would be taking our trip in and were introduced to our pilot. “Would you like to sit in the front?” was the question asked I was already climbing in as I answered “Oh Yeah!”. As the pilot carried out his checks he asked us if this was our first time in a helicopter, when we told him it was he couldn’t help but smile, he knew the experience we were in for, the fun we were going to have.
The staff helped to strap us into the seats and handed us headphones if we wanted them so we could hear each other, of course we wanted them! No helicopter selfie would be complete without the headphones!! Some final checks and some radio communication from the pilot and the rotor blades started up…we were going!! As we lifter there was a second when we wobbled slightly and I have to admit my heart skipped a beat! But as we gained altitude and moved out over the sea everything became smooth and we just enjoyed the ride and began picking out the sights of Monaco along the coast.
The views were awesome as we passed along the coast. We could see the luxury cruise liners gently sailing towards the ports, the super yachts moored in the harbours, the luxury apartments built up on the hillsides all squeezing in a sea view and then the mountains beyond.
There was so much to take in with this completely new experience of flying in a helicopter, we had a panoramic view from inside the cockpit, it was an absolutely fantastic way of taking in Monaco! We were able to pick out so many of the places we had explored and sights we had seen during our time in the principality, we hardly stopped speaking the entire time we were in the air.
The sun was beginning to go down during our flight, although it wasn’t quite sunset yet it provided a lovely light to Monaco and the Riviera. Our pilot pointed out some of the sights and other villages as we flew further along the coast, what a perspective of this fabled part of the world. I really got the sense that our pilot was trying his hardest to make our first helicopter flight that extra bit special. He clearly enjoyed what he was doing…and can you really blame him?
As we came back along the coast I put the camera down and just let it all sink in… I was in a helicopter flying along the coast of Monaco…not bad for our first helicopter flight! TripAdvisor you had done it again…the perfect activity for this breathtaking location!
Although the tour wasn’t too long, thinking back, it felt a lot longer than it actually was. Taking the whole experience in, trying to capture the moments on camera, seeing this place I had heard so much of from this entirely new angle, it was something I will never forget. This new travel experience had definitely left us with a story to tell.
Know better. Book better. Go better.
